What is it about cheap webhosting that makes it so cheap? What do you sacrifice to have this lower price? Almost all cheap web hosting options are shared web hosting options. This means, with certainty, that you will sacrifice a number of options in terms of speed, security and reliability. Multiple cheap, shared hosting packages share the same server. This means that when any of the other users does anything with their hosting that lags the operation of your server like creating a CRON job incorrectly that continues to pull resources away from the server, your site(s) will be effected by it. This may mean that your website(s) could be offline for an unknown amount of time because of the negligence of a single user. Since there could be dozens of users sharing hosting on one server the odds are against you when it comes to possible crashes. Sharing the server with a number of users also means that the amount of available bandwidth is split between all users. If a user hosts a high traffic site, or a website that hosts a lot of video or flash that takes a lot of bandwidth to load, your website will suffer as a result. If it was your intention to host one of these sites yourself, you may not want to do it on shared web hosting. If one of the users that shares your server has security flaws within their account there is a chance that any damage that can be done will be done to the server itself, not any of their sites alone. This will cause your websites to suffer any crashes or limited bandwidth that may result. Cheap web hosting is an alright option if your intention is to host small content based sites and you don't stand to lose a lot of money from slow loading or downtimes. Just remember that cheap webhosting is not always comparable to affordable web hosting.
